Legislative Redistricting Will Not Move Forward During the June Special Session

Atlanta — Georgia Conservation Voters issued the following statement following reports that congressional and legislative redistricting will not move forward during the June special session.

“For weeks, Georgians have raised concerns about efforts to redraw Georgia’s voting maps ahead of the election. The Georgia Assembly’s declaration to halt Governor Kemp’s call for gerrymandering our maps  is a welcome development for voters who have made it clear that lawmakers should be focused on the challenges facing everyday people rather than pursuing a rushed mid-decade redistricting process.”

Fair representation matters. Gerrymandering weakens Black communities by making it harder for residents to hold elected officials accountable and advocate for the issues that affect their everyday lives. Communities deserve transparency, meaningful public input, and a process that puts voters ahead of politics.

As Georgians continue to bear the brunt of rising utility bills, housing costs, and affordability challenges, state leaders should be focused on protecting consumers, addressing the growing impacts of data centers on our communities, and ensuring access to clean air and water. These issues have a far greater impact on the daily lives of Georgians than unnecessarily redrawing district lines for political gain.

While this development is encouraging, Georgians cannot afford to become complacent. Court cases involving Georgia’s maps remain ongoing, and future attempts to redraw districts are likely. The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais has created new uncertainty around voting rights protections and reinforces the need for Congress and our elected leaders to strengthen, rather than weaken, the protections that ensure every voter has an equal voice in our democracy.

Wednesday’s  news is an important step, but the work of protecting voting rights, strengthening our democracy, and ensuring our government remains accountable to the people is far from over.
