SB 94: Ask Legislators to Give Georgians a Seat at the Table and Protect Families, Not Corporate Deals

When Georgia Power goes before the Public Service Commission (PSC) to ask for higher rates, they show up with teams of lawyers and experts. Regular families, seniors, and small businesses don’t have the same means to represent themselves. Those decisions still affect everyone’s power bill, but there is no one in the room whose job is to speak up for regular customers.

Senate Bill 94 fixes that by restarting the Consumers’ Utility Counsel (CUC) whose role is to represent ratepayers when utilities ask to raise rates or recover big costs. The Counsel would be able to review spending, ask questions, and push back when utilities try to pass costs onto customers who did not ask for or benefit from those investments. Senate Bill 94 gives Georgia ratepayers a seat at the table and a voice in decisions that directly affect their monthly bills and we need to remind our representatives that a vote for SB 94 is a vote for consumer power over corporations.

Update on SB34

SB 34 would prevent electric utilities from shifting the costs created by very large electricity users—including data centers and large industrial or commercial facilities with peak demand of 100 megawatts or more—onto everyday customers. Expenses for fuel, generation, and transmission due to large facility demands must be covered primarily by those centers. The goal is to shield residential and small business customers from higher utility costs.
